Gypsywart

Gypsywort and bugleweed are two herbs that could be considered twins. They are both used to make permanent black die. As a matter of fact the gypsy’s used the herb to color their skin to resemble Egyptians and Africans when performing there magic acts thus the name “Gypsywort stuck and is used to this day.

Unfortunately the herb is of not much use as a food or food enhancer. The stem and the leaves are whats used for medicinal purpose. In a pinch and no food you could survive on eating the root but be forewarned it would be no culinary feast but I supposed if you were starving that wouldn’t matter.

The stems and leaves are used for astringents, sedatives, anxiety, tuberculosis, and heart palpitations.

If your looking for the plant look near ravines, stream and rivers. The best time of year is from August to October  as this is when the seeds are ripe. Something really unique about this herb is that it contains both female and male organs making it self fertile. It is pollinated by bees and insects.

The scientific name for gypsywort is Lycopus Europaeus. Used for a variety of ailments the most popular of which are to slow and strengthen heart contractions, ease nervousness, treat coughs, bleeding from the lungs and excessive periods.

The flower of this plant have been used as a sedative as well as an astringent. Because of the iodine like properties the leaves are also used for hyperthyroidism. The ideal time of year to harvest the flower is from June to September.

Gypsywort can be used in aroma therapy when mixed with a variety of other oils and fragrances. You should be able to find Gypsywort at your local health supplement store or online.

It is not a real common herb that is talked about or used alot which is to your advantage. The demand is not that great so it is relatively cheap and easy to get. A number of the herbs that Gypsywort has similar properties with are becoming hard to find and expensive, so switch to Gypsywort, save  money and get exceptional benefits.
