Ginseng

Out of all of the herbal supplements on the market today, Ginseng is the most widely used. In earlier times Ginseng went by a different name, “man root” because the root resembled the shape of a man. To this day many people believe in the powers of Ginseng as they believe that it has healing and mystical powers. The Ancient Chinese thought that when a plant resembles a human body part that it would have a healing effect on that part of the body. In other words if a plant resembled a hand it would have the ability to heal the hands. But since Ginseng resembles the entire body it is thought that is can bring balance and well being to the whole body.

Ginseng is found in almost all of the designer sports drinks. This herb  long known for its’ energy creation and stress calming effects has found its’ way into the American life style. The Chinese have used ginseng for centuries and are the ones credited with bringing it to the fore front in herbal medicine.

Ginseng contains complex carbohydrates as well as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and has anti-cancer elements. It is also used in many countries to help with a hangover. Today many body builders use ginseng to strength physically as well as mental sharpness all the while maintaining good balance.
In Asia they use ginseng to help with mental sharpness, eliminate anemia, help prevent diabetes, coughs, neurosis, asthma and TB. It is used regularly as a tonic for the liver.

One of the main concerns with using ginseng is the quality of the product itself. There is a tendency to over process the herb rendering it useless. To avoid this a number of supermarkets are starting to carry the ginseng root. This is by far the preferred method to purchase the herb.

If you’re making soups, stews, rice and stir fries just cut a few pieces of the root and add it while cooking. That way you get the full benefit from the root. You can even mash it after its been cooked. It is a common ingredient is Chinese, Korean and Asian dishes.

Ginseng is used in chicken and mushroom dishes and is used in deserts for some added zest. Ginseng jelly is a great way to start the day. No matter which way you use ginseng it’s one herb that will give back many times in the health area.
