Basil

Basil, oregano, olive oil and garlic. I can smell the pasta sauce simmering on the stove tempting all those who come close enough to get a whiff of the fragrant smell. Pasta sauce without basil is like a car without wheels. You need the basil to make the sauce and it’s the sauce that makes the difference.

When that sauce is simmering on the stove the flavor of the basil is intensifying. As a matter of fact the name basil means ” be fragrant”. It’s  one of the easiest herbs to grow, likes plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures above 50 degrees.

For some reason the Greeks don’t like the herb but Americans and of course the Italians would have a hard time doing without it. The Hindus even plant it around their houses as a sign of Happiness.

This is a versatile herb and can be used for a lot more than pasta. It’s great for flavoring fish, vegetables, meats, and soups. It is also used for tea.

People used to plant basil near their entrance doors to keep away flies. Flies do not share our love for basil and do every thing they can to avoid the herb.

On the contrary though in years gone by when a man had eyes for a women he would give her a bouquet of basil and if she accepted that was a sign that she would love him and be faithful through the years. Maybe that’s one of the reasons for short lived marriages - not enough basil used or given. What do you think?

Since basil is a kissing cousin to mint you know that it has to be used for medicinal purposes also. Mint and basil can both be used for it’s anti gas properties as well as a digestive aid. It’s not uncommon for basil to be used as a remedy for stomach cramps, vomiting, constipation, headaches and anxiety. When Basil is used for these purposes it is generally made into a hot tea for drinking.

Drinking a good cup of basil tea is one of the surest ways to get a good nights sleep. Those who don’t care for the tea, it is on the strong side, can purchase basil capsules at any good health food store.

The quickest way to use basil is to go outside by your back door and pick a few leaves, mince them with a knife, add them to you favorite dish and enjoy the great taste and the healing properties of basil.
